Searching for an easy and delicious brunch or breakfast recipe? This Overnight French Toast is the perfect easy make ahead recipe, and is always a hit!

I’ve made a version of this amazingly decadent french toast recipe for so many different gatherings–and shared it with so many of my friends over the years–that I honestly can’t believe I haven’t posted it here until now. It is absolutely delicious yet super simple to make and practically fool-proof.

Best of all, it can be prepared the night before so that all you have to do is crumble on the streusel topping, pop it in the oven, and heat the syrup. It is my number one go-to recipe for any big breakfast or brunch, and we will for sure be adding this one to our Easter Brunch menu this year!

FAQs

Can you make French toast ahead of time and reheat? ›

Freezer and Make-Ahead Tips

Freeze cooked French Toast Casserole for up to three months. Remove it from the freezer the day before you want to serve it and let thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Cover the pan with foil, then reheat at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes or until warmed through.

Can French toast be kept overnight? ›

The best overnight French toast is made with bread that is dried out so it can absorb the batter perfectly! Keep leftover overnight French toast covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Freeze before or after baking by wrapping it in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil for up to 6 weeks.

Is overnight French toast soggy? ›

There are a few potential reasons why your overnight French toast may be soggy. One possible culprit is that you did not use dense enough bread, which allowed the custard mixture to soak in too much.

Should I leave my bread out overnight for French toast? ›

Ideally, the bread should be slightly stale. A drier bread will soak up all the custard. Bread can be left out with the wrapper open the day before cooking. If you find yourself in a pinch, dry your bread slices in a 275°F oven for 10 minutes before soaking them in the custard.

Can you make French toast and eat it later? ›

Yes! The French toast can be made ahead and then toasted or microwaved during a busy morning on the go. Think you don't have time to make French toast during the week? You can make it ahead and freeze!

Does French toast taste good the next day? ›

To Make Ahead: The batter can be made 1-2 days ahead of time, depending on the freshness of your ingredients. To Freeze: Allow french toast to cool completely and store in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months. Rewarm on a skillet, in the toaster, or for a few seconds in the microwave.

How do you keep French bread fresh overnight? ›

Wrap the baguette in aluminum foil.

Tear off a large sheet of aluminum foil and lay the baguette on it lengthwise. Fold the long sides of the foil over the baguette and tuck the ends of the foil under. Crimp the aluminum foil so it's sealed shut.

Can you refrigerate leftover French toast mixture? ›

How long can you leave French toast mix in the fridge? If the bread has been placed in the custard batter, then you shouldn't leave the bread soaked in the batter longer than overnight. If you are simply storing the custard batter on its own in the fridge, then it will keep for 3 – 4 days.

What happens if you soak French toast too long? ›

Leaving the bread in the egg mixture for too long is another route to soggy French toast.

What bread is best for French toast? ›

For a solid French toast, aim for sturdy bread with a uniform texture and a soft crust. Hearty sandwich bread, brioche, challah, and shokupan (Japanese milk bread) are all great choices. Avoid rustic loaves with thick crusts or large holes in the interior.

How often should you flip French toast? ›

Add soaked bread to skillet and cook, swirling occasionally, until browned on bottom side, about 3 minutes. Sprinkle top side of bread with sugar, flip, and continue to cook, swirling occasionally, until browned on second side, about 3 minutes longer.

Can you store and reheat French toast? ›

The challenge lies in keeping it fresh for longer than a day or two. One option is to freeze it, but if you do that, it may become soggy after thawing. For best results, skip thawing altogether and reheat frozen French toast in the oven or on the stovetop.

Can you make toast ahead of time? ›

Slices of good quality white bread are trimmed of their crusts, then brushed with melted butter, seasoned with salt and pepper, and toasted until crispy. They can be made ahead, meaning you are already one step closer when it comes to preparing your party food.
