La division du travail idéaltypique dans l’artisanat est une division du travail par classe d’âge impliquant l’exercice commun du métier et la maîtrise de l’ensemble du procès de fabrication par les travailleurs de l’atelier, qu’ils soient ouvriers ou patrons. Ceux-ci suivent un même cheminement socioprofessionnel : passant par une norme identique d’acquisition des savoirs, ils adhèrent à un même modèle de réussite sociale par l’installation. Ils sont alors unis par une sorte de miroir identificatoire, socle des régulations de l’artisanat. La réalité aujourd’hui observée s’éloigne de ce modèle de métier. Depuis les années 1980, le contexte législatif et institutionnel s’est en effet transformé, élargissant les frontières de l’entreprise artisanale et réduisant les freins à l’installation. Ainsi, la division du travail artisanal tend à se redéfinir. Comparant « entrants » et « sortants » de l’artisanat, nous avons pu observer une tendance à la séparation entre les activités de production et de gestion, ce qui diminue de fait, la pratique commune du métier entre salariés et patrons de l’artisanat. Le recrutement des artisans s’ouvre aussi, entraînant la coexistence de cursus socioprofessionnels variés. Finalement, l’artisanat qui constituait une filière de promotion ouvrière est aujourd’hui également un filet de sécurité pour des reconvertis issus des classes moyennes.
