Healthy Ground Turkey Chili

Here we’ve lightened things up with lean ground turkey instead of fattier ground beef and no one will notice the difference between the two in this delicious turkey chili recipe!

It’s still perfectly satisfying comfort food and you’ll be wanting to make this easy turkey chili time and time again during the fall and winter seasons!

This is full of veggies and it’s packed with protein thanks to the turkey and a generous amount of kidney beans.

You’ll love the blend of spices (which build up great flavor) and that rich tomato-y broth. Then finish it up with toppings as you wish (to keep it healthy add more veggies!).

Just don’t forget the crackers for dipping!

Make it Mild

Ancho chili powder can be just a bit spicier than regular chili powder. If you’d like to tone it down then just use 2 Tbsp regular (mild) chili powder and omit the Ancho chili powder.

To make this in the slow cooker here are the steps to follow:

  1. Cook turkey in pot in oil. Transfer to slow cooker.

Variations

  • Try with ground beef, ground chicken or even ground pork in place of turkey.
  • Switch up the type of chili powder. Use sweet or smoked paprika (I like either type here).
  • Sneak in other vegetables. Great options include corn, carrots, or zucchini.
  • Reduce chicken broth for a more stew-like chili, increase for a more soup-like chili.
  • Make it spicier by sautéing one or two diced jalapeños (with or without seeds) with the bell pepper mixture.
  • Use any color of bell pepper (red, orange, yellow or green) or switch to a different type of pepper such as poblano or Anaheim.

Turkey Chili Toppings to Try

What’s a bowl of chili without a handful of flavorful toppings? A few of our favorite chili toppings are:

  • Cheddar cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Red or green onions
  • Avocado
  • Cayenne pepper or thinly sliced jalapeños
  • Tortilla chips
  • Saltine crackers

How to Freeze Chili for Later

Turkey chili freezes incredibly well and is easily reheated. To freeze this easy turkey chili:

  • First let it cool a bit, no more than one hour at room temperature (or wait to freeze it until the next day after it’s been in your fridge and cooled).
  • Ladle the chili into freezer-safe containers or jars.
  • Freeze up to 3 months.
  • When you’re ready to reheat the chili, place it in the fridge to thaw overnight and then reheat on the stove or in the microwave.

FAQs

What is the secret to amazing chili? ›

Elevate your chili recipe by adding an extra layer of flavor. Cocoa powder, bacon, cinnamon, ground coffee and tomato paste will all add a rich sweet & salty flavors that are sure to surprise and delight.

What gives chili a rich flavor? ›

Cumin, Chile Powders, and Paprika are the most common spices in chili followed by garlic, onion, coriander, Mexican oregano, and bay leaves. These ingredients can be combined to create a savory and well-balanced pot of top notch comfort food.

Is chili better the longer it cooks? ›

A low and slow cook time—at least an hour total—is key for drawing out the most flavor in a pot of chili. Yes, a quick chili is most welcome on weeknights, but it won't have quite the same results. A slow cooker works wonders, but if you're short on time, try a pressure cooker.

Should chili be thick or soupy? ›

Ideally, chili should simmer low and slow. This allows some of the liquid to evaporate and results in a thicker consistency and deeper, more complex flavor as the aromatics and spices release their superpowers.

What liquid is best for chili? ›

While something as basic as water will get the job done, broth is a quick and simple way to give chili an extra-savory flavor, and canned tomatoes can add a layer of sweetness. When adding beer or wine, you'll want to keep it to about 1/2 cup when using the slow cooker, so the flavor isn't overpowering.

Why would you put vinegar in chili? ›

With only about 1 tablespoon per pot added toward the end of the cooking process, the vinegar will make the flavors more vibrant without overwhelming the dish with its biting tang. Through just a splash, everything becomes a little brighter, and the chili's flavors are more balanced.

How do you add depth of flavor to chili? ›

Is it lacking in savory depth? Add a hit of soy sauce, Worcestershire, or tamari. These salty, savory powerhouses won't dominate or change the flavor of your chili so much as amplify what's there. Start with one tablespoon, stir, and taste before you add another.

Why put cinnamon in chili? ›

Cinnamon. The beauty of ground cinnamon is that it brings a warmth to your chili, without being spicy. It works well with other flavors commonly found in chili (like tomato, cumin and chile powder) so you only need a little bit to achieve the desired balance.

How long to simmer chili for the best flavor? ›

Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer until meat and vegetables are very tender and flavors have developed in the chili, about 90 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mix kidney beans into beef and vegetables. Continue to simmer until beans are hot, about 30 minutes more.

Should I saute onions before adding to chili? ›

Sautéing onions, garlic, and other veggies first coaxes maximum flavor out of them. So make sure your onions, for example, are soft and translucent before you add your liquid.

Why do you put celery in chili? ›

Stirring it in with the spices, onion, celery, and garlic ensures it breaks up as it cooks slowly. There's yet another slow step in this recipe, coming after the tomatoes, tomato sauce, peppers and beans have been added: make sure to stir your pot every so often over the next two hours.

When to add sour cream to chili? ›

Stir in beans, chicken broth, green chiles, salt, cumin, oregano, black pepper, and cayenne pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until flavors have blended, about 30 minutes. Remove chili from heat; stir in sour cream and whipping cream until incorporated. Serve hot and enjoy!

Why put cornmeal in chili? ›

2. Add cornmeal: Cornmeal absorbs excess liquid, so adding a tablespoon of it to your pot of chili will thicken the final result. Allow the chili to simmer for about ten minutes after you add the cornmeal.

How to thicken turkey chili? ›

Use All-Purpose Flour or Cornstarch

"Transfer some warm liquid [from the chili] to a separate bowl. Whisk in the flour or cornstarch, then slowly stir it back in the pot," advises Wofford. Bring the mixture back to a boil, which will "activate" the ingredient, instantly thickening the dish.

When to add beans to chili? ›

You know the saying, “save the best for last?” To keep your beans nice and plump, add them about 20 minutes before you finish cooking. This will give them plenty of time to impart that perfectly seasoned chili flavor to your recipe without overcooking.

What makes can chili taste better? ›
