A tattoo on my brain is a short doc made interesting by its subject and the perspective. It's a twist of fate that Dr. Dan Gibbs, a neuroscientist, is now living with Alzheimer's disease that too at a fairly younger age. His narration and perspective is retrospective. While he doesn't seek sympathy, he does want the audience to understand his perspective, which is focusing more on slowing the progress of Alzheimer's than finding the cure. This perspective along with encouraging to train the brain is truly refreshing. Other than that, this short doc is simplistically presented and perfect for this format.

“It’s my personal view that we should stop thinking about a cure for Alzheimer’s, but slowing the progression of the disease, and you may never get dementia.”
In a climate that so heavily focuses on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, it’s refreshing to hear another option. While a cure might help those in the future who develop the disease, it does nothing for those suffering from it now. While a cure should still be researched, I found Dr. Dan Gibbs to be convincing concerning focusing on slowing down effects of the disease. His strategies combined with his personal experience made for a compelling narrative.
I also can’t imagine how hard it probably was to make this docu-short, considering Gibbs’ challenges. Takes a lot of courage.

So Paramount + basically just autoplayed this documentary once I finished ABCs of Book Banning and I’m surprised this one didn’t get any traction. I can’t imagine just how haunting it could be as a brain doctor to come basically diagnose himself with this progressive disease, knowing that it’s only a matter of time before it may be too late.
With that being said, this doc is extremely positive and was definitely a breath of fresh air. He spoke about slowing down the development, finding ways for elders to train their brain and he became a sort of poster child for preemptive Alzheimer’s treatment.
I sort of felt a deep sense of fear for this man, seeing his life almost completely transformed into an Alzheimer’s researcher, with his main subject being his own deteriorating brain. I feel for his wife, watching her husband obsess over this must be kind of difficult for her.

Paramount+ suggestion while mindlessly scrolling. Very interesting documentary concept in the true story of a doctor getting the disease he’s studied and helped to fight his entire life.

Great documentary filmmaking. I am deeply impressed at the even-tempered way in which Dan Gibbs confronts and manages his disease. It is inspiring to witness someone who is familiar with the potential consequences of his diagnosis remain so calm and rational. No histrionics, just a straightforward plan to slow down the degradation of his brain function.
